Every so often I get a chance to make the drive from Arizona to Irvine, California for the weekly Cars and Coffee meet. Held at the Mazda USA corporate center each Saturday, nearly 100 cars from all different decades and makes come showoff.
Having just finished the upgraded VF Engineering supercharger on our BMW M3, I thought it would be a good time to hit the road. With a bolt-on Vortech centrifugal blower, you would expect the V8 to be a gas guzzler on the 400 mile journey. Surprisingly the M3 with DCT transmission got an impressive 27mpg on the HWY. I say surprisingly because coming from a E60 M5 that got maybe 18-20, this boosted BMW did well and was an excellent cruiser through the mountains via the I-8. Very responsive when needed and had no cooling issues coming from the 100f temps of Yuma, AZ.
Once we arrived at the WAY to early meet at 6:00am, we parked with 2 other VF620 BMW M3’s. One was also a DCT 7speed sedan with a Vorsteiner kit and the other a 6speed stockish looking coupe. From one extreme to the highly stock looking setup, the 3 cars combined a total of 1860 horsepower. Unbeknown to others each one of these RWD monsters makes 500 wheel horsepower which could burn a handful of other exotics in the parking lot.
