The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante, is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The name was standardized as “Elantra” worldwide in 2001, except in South Korea. The first generation Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6L straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve unit produced roughly 113hp at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds. These numbers were impressive at the time but little did we know – the future of Hyundai would take the world by storm.
Over two decades later, the seventh generation Elantra was unveiled on 17 March 2020 in West Hollywood, with the model code name CN7. It teased a new “parametric dynamics” design and a return to a longer yet broader fastback rear-end sports sedan style. Shortly after, it was named the 2021 North American Car of the Year.
In July 2021, the Elantra N was announced as the performance model of the Elantra within the Hyundai N sub-brand. The vehicle was powered by a 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine with a 52 mm turbine wheel that maintains the maximum output from about 5500 rpm for brisk acceleration. The Elantra N produced roughly 276hp powered by an 8-speed automatic DCT and had a curb weight of just 3,296 lbs – allowing the Elantra N to accelerate from 0-60 in just 5 seconds. All this from a “mom’s car”, is impressive right?
But here at Vivid Racing, we always like to push our cars past their limits – so we decided to install our VR Tuning Box and see how much power we can get out of the 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine. The Hyundai Elantra N V2 tuning box is the best modification you can do to increase overall engine performance. The tuning box kit is a plug-and-play solution to boost your vehicle’s performance like an ECU flash, but without affecting your warranty. Instead, it intercepts the boost pressure sensor and MAP sensor to increase peak boost pressure while the ECU remains in control to increase fuel as needed. By doing this, the VR Tuning Box is essentially tricking the ECU without directly modifying it.

Now that you know what the VR Tuning Box is and how it works – let’s get to the juicy stuff. When we put the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N on the dyno to run some stock baselines, we managed to get 267 whp and 285 lb-ft of torque. Now this was, to say the least, a respectable amount of power, but we knew we could get more out of the 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine. So after installing our VR Tuning Box, which only took about 15 minutes, we began our final dyno runs with the Race map set to 7 – our highest setting. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N was now producing 342 whp and 405 lb-ft of torque, which makes it faster than the iconic Honda Civic Type-R.
These numbers were impressive on the dyno sheet, but we wanted to put the VR Tuning Box up to the test – so we took it out on the streets to see the improvements in 0-60 over stock. So we first ran the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N at its stock form, with our VR Tuning Box turned off. The Elantra N had difficulty gaining traction with its built-in launch control feature, but fortunately for us, the smooth-shifting 8-speed DCT transmission got us a 0-60 of 6.08 seconds. After the stock 0-60 testing, the roads started to get a bit dusty due to a nearby storm approaching – but that did not stop us from having fun. We turned the VR Tuning Box all the way to its maximum performance setting and let it rip. As the Elantra N struggled to gain traction from first to second gear, the battle was on – and after a few seconds our results came in. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N paired with our simple plug-n-play VR Tuning Box, managed to lose over half a second in the 0-60 test – coming at 5.55 seconds.
We refer to the VR Tuned V2 Tuning Box as a “plug-n-play” upgrade because it truly is! The installation is as simple as a 1-hour install if you’re taking your time.
