The Can-Am X3 is one of the coolest vehicles to hit the dirt. But like any turbocharged vehicle, it has components that you can upgrade for more power and better handling. If you do a tune on a turbo vehicle, you can get more power. In some cases, vehicles can gain up to 30% more horsepower and torque. On the 154 horsepower Can-Am X3, the new VR Tuned Tuning Box Kit gives you a plug and play 10% gain in horsepower over stock. Recently we wrote an in-depth article showcasing dyno runs of the Can-Am X3 and what others are “claiming” to have for horsepower seen here. This is Chapter 2 showing more testing of a new tuning product. The Tuning Box Kit is just one more product to show why VR Tuned is better than the competition with new innovative products to give you more power at your control.

The VR Tuned Tuning Box Kits are designed and produced in Germany. Tuning Boxes came about for turbo and supercharged vehicles where ECU tuning became very tedious. Many new vehicles have what is called “tuning encryption” where you cannot read out the data from the ECU via the OBDII or bench flashing. Some factory tools are very sophisticated where they show flash counters and software updates so any tampering is immediately detected and your warranty gets thrown out the window. Fortunately for us UTV enthusiasts, Polaris or Can-Am is not there yet.
Each Tuning Box Kit features a plug and play system that uses factory connectors for a direct and easy install. The multi-processor tuning box is enclosed in an aluminum case that is weatherproof and designed to take a beating. These are perfect for the driver that wants more power and guaranteed to NOT have any warranty issues. The unit works off of sensor signals to increase the timing and boost pressure. Each sensor is controlled by the box so there is no flashing or altering the ECU. If you want to run it as a stock Can-Am, simply plug in the adapter. If you need to take it in for warranty and are concerned with the issue, unplug the harness. For those running higher octane, each tuning box features a dial on the box which controls the signal that is sent to the sensor. Typically the dial is set to 4 or 5 but for those running 95-100 octane can run 6 or 7.
We tested this kit on our Mustang Dyno running 91 octane in about a 100F ambient temperature room. As we showed on our previous article here how the competitor’s flash has some serious issues up top, we wanted to prove that the same vehicle, same conditions, same equipment would not have these issues from the VR Tuned flash or tuning box. With the internet a buzz about the tires used or how they sabotaged us, all is #fakenews. The rear wheels are factory and not big horns. We have seen the same issue on 2 different vehicles and this was further confirmed by completely separate tests by Bikeman Performance on their dyno (see here). As you can see from the dyno below and the video, the VR Tuned Tuning Box is very linear with no power band issues. The gains over stock are tremendous through out the entire power range.
Tuning box kits DO NOT lock to your vehicle or ECU. You can sell it if you get rid of your vehicle or decide to go another route. There is no cutting or splicing involved. Install takes about 30 minutes. Because the ECU is still kept in place, factory safety features are retained to ensure the longevity and reliability of your engine. All tuning box kits include a 3 year warranty on parts. Because the Tuning Box Kit is not modifying the ECU, it will not change your rev or speed limiter. Download Installation Instructions Here
