Many people understand that the flywheel is used as the surface the clutch grabs on to. Without, a manual transmission wouldn’t work. The flywheel is also used a for smoothing out inconsistencies in how the engine runs through rotational inertia. To put it simply, it’s harder for an engine to stall out randomly with a heavier flywheel and it makes the engine physically run smoother. Unfortunately, a heavy flywheel causes the engine to change RPM very slowly. This means in between shifts it can take an obnoxious amount of time for the RPMs to fall to the correct range for a smooth shift. The idea behind a lightweight flywheel is to fix this and other problems.
Clutch Masters, one of the biggest names in the clutch/flywheel market, has just released their new lightweight aluminum flywheel for the Cadillac ATS and Camaro 2.0T. This flywheel is significantly lighter than the stock unit, which will make the engine a tiny bit easier to stall but will improve acceleration, reduce turbo lag, and improve shift times. The OEM dual-mass flywheel weighs a hefty 31 lbs while this unit from Clutch Masters weighs a mere 16 lbs. Learn more and order by clicking here.
