In any type of motorsports, it is important to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission without any slipping or fading. Modifying an engine for high horsepower puts massive stress on the clutch. If the friction surface can’t handle the power it can cause slipping upon launch or in the higher RPM’s.
The solution for this is upgrading the clutch with a multi-puck or multi-plate system. Multi-puck discs provide enough friction to deliver power efficiently but do not provide enough surface area in high horsepower applications. One of the best alternatives to multi-puck is a multi-plate clutch.
With the factory clutches not being rated for higher horsepower, many owners seek a triple-disc clutch to handle the load. Triple disc clutches spread the load across three friction plates and spinning discs that increase clamping force. This delivers power instantly and directly without the chance of slipping.
HKS and ORC developed a triple-disc clutch for the Toyota Supra that utilizes the famous 2JZ-GTE engine. These turbocharged 3.0L straight-six engines from the ’90s were insanely over-engineered and under-tuned from the factory. Easily capable of achieving 750+ HP on stock internals, the 2JZ boasts massive potential with minor upgrades.
Being that the surface area of the friction material has increased, the HKS clutch is able to withstand up to 980 N/m torque.
