Working with the Toyota GR Corolla really brings out the true enthusiast inside of you. The small hot hatch cranks out 300hp from its 1.6L 3cylinder engine which is very impressive! In Part 1 of this build series, we baselined the car on our Mustang Dyno to see what the car really makes to the wheels. Now Part 2, we are going to install and Dyno test the AWE catback exhaust system for the Toyota GR Corolla.
The AWE Catback Exhaust is a full bolt-on system for the GR. It bolts right to the factory cat pipe to keep your car emissions friendly and reuses all the stock hangers. To increase power and sound, AWE uses 3 inch piping before it splits to the unique 3 outlet style of the GR Corolla. The is exhaust has a mount for the stock exhaust valve but is not functioning so the center exhaust is open all the time. Featuring brilliant 4 inch slash cut tips and a large single center tip to fit the diffuser opening, the new system is pretty stunning to see. After we open the box to show off the parts, you can follow along with the install. The rear exhaust hangers come off with easy and the 2 bolts connecting it couldn’t be more simple to remove.
You will be quite surprised in the dyno gains from the AWE Exhaust addition. Running the car in 4th gear, our baseline numbers were about 250awhp and 260lb/ft. With a similar test scenario, we see a peak gain of about 15awhp and about 12lb/ft. Because the exhaust is 3 inch and flows better, the turbo has less restriction and backpressure giving you more instant torque. When the turbo spools up around 3400rpm, we saw a jump of almost 30awhp!
