Just like any turbocharged car, the FK8 Civic Type R benefits from an aftermarket exhaust. With more flow comes more power; however, many enthusiasts chose only to install a catback exhaust, leaving the downpipe stock. The OEM downpipe is restrictive has a substantial effect on how quickly the turbo can spool up. Up to this point, HKS has offered only a catback exhaust for the FK8, but now they’re offering a downpipe/front pipe combo! This differs from many FK8 downpipes which don’t include the front pipe.
To improve flow as much as possible, HKS used 3” piping for the downpipe and the front-pipe. The larger diameter also improves throttle response and decreases turbo lag by helping the turbocharger spool up faster. Without a catalytic converter, flow is further improved, however, it’s for off-road use only. On top of the power gains and improved throttle response, the HKS downpipe and front-pipe are significantly lighter than stock, further improving performance.
