When Nissan initially designed the GTR, they did not exactly have drag racing in mind. It was supposed to be the supercar which was faster around the track than almost every other supercar at the time. As tuner realized the VR38 could make massive amounts of power, straight line racing events became dominated by the R35. The fastest R35s are now in the 6-second range in the 1/4 mile. Keeping over 3000 horsepower in a straight line is a handful, so HKS has sought to make it easier with their drag coilovers.
For a drag racing application, you need a lot of travel in the rear. Without enough travel in the rear, you need a stiff rear spring, and a stiff rear spring will reduce weight transfer to the rear and ultimately decrease traction. HKS understood this and designed the rear suspension to improve rear end traction as much as possible. The result? More consistent grip and better 1/4 mile times.
