Although many of us long to one day one a BMW M3 or M4, for many of us it’s not financially achievable. Luckily, BMW’s non-M cars are better than most people realize, but they lack the power we all want. The 330i, in particular, has a small 2.0L turbocharged engine to push it around and could benefit from a small bump in power. Luckily, getting more power out of a turbocharged engine is pretty easy. If you can feed the turbocharger lots of cool air, it can compress that air and make lots of power. The idea behind an aftermarket cold air intake is to increase the amount of air the turbo can suck in compared to the stock intake.
Injen, one of the largest cold air intake manufacturers in the world, has just announced their new cold air intakes for the BMW 330i! Just like other modern BMWs, keeping the air/fuel ratios in the correct range is key to keeping the car happy, and Injen managed to make this happen. Not only is the car happy, but the larger filter and large piping help increase airflow, letting more air get to the turbocharger so it can be compressed. Not only is there more air getting to the turbos, but the large heat shield helps stop hot air from under the engine bay from being sucked in, which further improves power.
None of this means anything if the intake doesn’t consistently add power. As shown by Injen’s dyno graphs below, this intake has been dyno proven to pick up 10+ horsepower at the peak, with solid gains throughout the power band. At the bottom of the rev-range, there is a big increase in torque which will make your 330i way faster off the line and make it much more fun to drive around town since the RPMs will stay pretty low inside town.
