Although the EcoBoost powered Raptor is far more powerful than it’s predecessor, there is always room for improvement. As air is compressed, it’s temperature increases. Since turbocharged engines used compressed air to increase horsepower and torque, extremely hot air can become an issue. This is the entire point of the intercooler, which works by cooling the compressed air before it enters the engine.
