The rumors were out, the testing was being completed, and the parts were ready to go into boxes. K&N knew we had a Project M3 and there was only 1 car to use to promote this new product. Why would we use it? What would it look like? And how would it perform? K&N did the unthinkable and simply KILLED the BMW intake market with their incredible power producing, reasonably priced, and high quality Typhoon intake for the E46 M3. Where all the competition was selling $400 intakes that barely performed, K&N released their $250 short ram intake system to the public. Available in a stunning silver finish, the K&N intake put down 8 wheel horsepower at aroun 4000rpm allowing only more horsepower as the RPM’s increased.
Installing the K&N unit was very simple. K&N provided the high flow aluminum and CNC machined intake pipe, K&N high flow cone filter, plastic heat shield, and all hardware necessary for the installation.
The new K&N short ram intake sat pointed downward to suck up the air flow as it is passed through the engine compartment. The factory MAF sensor was retained to ensure proper idle and air fuel mixtures. Since K&N always uses their cone air filters, the filter is reusable for the life of the vehicle and can be recleaned easily once every 10,000 miles with the optional K&N Filter Charger kit.
With the intake installed, its debut at SEMA, and the sales success in the BMW community, we are also very satisfied with this K&N product. The car has more pull through the top RPM’s, the engine sound is improved, and the look of the engine bay has been enhanced.
