The race car variant is expected to arrive next month, as Ford prepares to enter the model in the Le Mans GTE class for the 24-hour endurance race. Work is also being done on the road car, which according to Car and Driver will come with at least 700 hp. Coincidentally, our spy photographer captured a prototype model on the streets wearing odd-shaped body parts and no paint, but still looking decidedly menacing. Expect the head- and taillights and exhaust outlets to change on the production model.
Ford Performance engineers are also working on carbon-fiber and forged-aluminum wheels for the GT. Thanks to a host of microprocessors, six CAN networks and more than 50 vehicle sensors, the third-gen GT will utilize active aeros, advanced traction and stability controls, variable damping, as well as four driving modes of Normal, Sport, Track and Wet. Doors will be a combination of gullwing and scissor, with hinges set on an axis parallel to the A-pillars, helping to provide a narrow, compact cockpit. The production GT should arrive next year as a 2017 model in highly limited numbers with no more than 1,000 units expected to be built over the supercar’s lifetime.
