Looking to enhance your Honda Civic Type-R handling and look? Then the best bet is to go after a set of coilovers. Coilovers are the upgrade you need to improve the vehicles ride quality on the street and track while getting a nice stance that doesn’t make your Civic look like its ready to go off-road. So what is a coilover? Coilovers are a combination of a shock absorber and springs that replace your factory components. Most aftermarket coilovers feature adjustable height and dampening. Adjusting the ride height of your car is by rotating the spring on the threaded collar that sits on the shock. This allows the car to go up or down and also puts pre-load on the shock. To much lowering and the shock will not have enough stroke to properly perform. This can also cause the car to be very bouncing because the spring is compressed more than necessary. Finding the right balance of shock performance and ride height isn’t hard to do. But you have to take into account what you are using the car for.
Coilovers are typically a monotube or twin tube shock design. A monotube is a single piston inside the shock housing that is more rigid and responsive. A twin tube design is a cheaper way manufacture a shock. Though these are good entry level coilovers, they can lack the performance you command out of your vehicle handling. Both options can have adjustable dampening. Dampening is the combination of rebound and compression. Higher end coilovers will have separate adjustability where your mid and lower level coilovers will have the combined dampening into a single adjustment. How many clicks is not always as important as what the click is doing. When setting the coilover soft or stiff by turning the adjustment knobs, this can also affect how the car corners. Being soft will have it sag under load giving you better grip but you may lose out on fast reaction going from a hard left to right turn. Having a coilover to stiff will see the car bouncing or skipping where grip is lost. Adjusting your coilover settings can also be determined by the tire compound you are running, if you have upgraded sway bars, and what type of track it is. But for the majority of us, we want a good balanced ride quality for the street that can also perform great in the twisties.
