Congrats on getting yourself a Toyota Tacoma Gen 4 truck! The 2024+ Tacoma is a major improvement over previous generations. Available in popular trims such as the SR, SR5, Limited, and TRD versions, all of these new Tacoma trucks have one thing in common; the new 2.4L turbocharged engine! A turbo Tacoma means the world of modifications becomes much easier to gain power.
Why is gaining horsepower and torque important for Toyota Tacoma owners? The 2.4L already comes equipped with about 280 horsepower and the hybrid TRD Pro has 326hp which is good for the compact truck. But as you start to outfit your vehicle with more gear for your offroad adventures or weekend traveling, you start to add weight to the truck which slows it down. Many Tacoma owners are looking to add Overland accessories such as racks, rooftop tents, awnings, and more which is great for that weekend getaway. Tents can weigh an extra 200-300 lbs alone. Add on some of the other gear, your essentials, and provisions, and you can easily add on an extra 500-800lbs of equipment! So this extra weight can affect your performance needs. More torque and horsepower for the Tacoma 2.4L means massive improvements when climbing or powering through sand washes on the trail!
So what mods can help you increase the horsepower of your new Toyota Tacoma? aFe Power makes the perfect couple of first mods to do that are off-road friendly and won’t have your dealer up in arms for warranty.
Cold Air Intake
Turbocharged cars love to breathe. The more airflow you can get into and out of that turbo the more power you will produce. aFe has their new Cold Air Intake which is designed in a sealed box which is perfect for the Tacoma owner who likes to go offroad. As tested on a stock truck, this intake added 15hp and 17ft/lbs over stock. This alone is a 5% increase in power! In addition to the performance, the air intake will enhance the sound of the engine making the truck way more fun to drive.
Intercooler pipes
To further improve the airflow of the 2.4L turbocharged engine, aFe Power has upgraded intercooler pipes. These new hot and cold side charge pipes are designed to improve the airflow to the air-to-water intercooler core. Providing smooth bends that do not cause turbulence inside the hoses helps increase efficiency delivering you more power. Where most OEM hoses are rubber or plastic, these new hoses are a combination of CNC-machined aluminum and aluminum tubing with silicone couplers to provide a strong, secure fitting. The charge pipes were dyno tested and they added 10hp and 11ft/lbs of torque. In fact, the cold side was tested against the stock pipe and flowed 5% better. The hot side was also tested flowing 12% more than stock!
Exhaust
Now that your turbocharged Toyota Tacoma is breathing better, it’s time to improve the exhaust flow. Exhausts are always the biggest restriction on a turbocharged vehicle. Turbos need to just blow straight out the hot side. But if you did this, it would be extremely loud like a trophy truck! So aFe has developed their new catback exhausts in different tip variations for the off-road enthusiast. A catback will not only add more horsepower and torque, it will help improve the sound of the truck giving you way more enjoyment as you go through the RPMs. The catback exhaust tested added nearly 13 horsepower and 15 ft/lbs of torque as tested on a Dynojet dyno.
Adding these mods gives you a combined horsepower increase of 38hp over stock which substantially improves the 2.4L Toyota Tacoma performance. Do you have more questions? Contact our Off-Road Specialists by Chat, Phone, or Email!
