What is a Driveshaft?
The driveshaft is an elongated round shaft, usually made of steel, which runs from the engine to the gears that turn the vehicle's wheels. The engine pistons transfer their power to gears that turn the drive shaft, creating a torque. The torque is then transferred to the wheels' gearing through the drive shaft, making them spin. It's precisely what makes the car burn rubber.
When the gas is fed into the engine piston chambers and ignited, it creates a compression that starts moving the vehicle. The pistons move up and down, and the drive shaft rotates through the engine and transmission gears. Another gearing transmits vertical motion to rotary motion. It makes the wheels turn around.
Although all vehicles perform essentially the same function, they rely on different drives and require different types of drive shafts. Typically, there is one type of drive shaft for rear-wheel-driven vehicles, another for front-wheel-driven cars, and another for all-wheel-driven vehicles.
How does it work?
The exchange of force from the engine and the transmission to the drive shaft creates tension. Think about it as opening a jar of peanut butter and having to exert the same force from when you start to open the jar until you open the jar and make your peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The torque is constant on the drive shaft. What is happening is the transfer of vertical energy to rotary energy.
