The unique mold-form forging process works by creating the shape of the wheel during the forging process, which allows the grain of the metal to flow with the shape of the wheel. The end result is a wheel that has much greater strength. This forging process is fundementally different than standard forged wheels, which don't have the shape created during the forging process. With standard forged wheels, the grain of the metal isn't matched with the shape of the wheel and this ultimately sacrafices strength.

Volk Racing’s Mold Form Forging Technology

All Volk Racing wheels are constructed using the exclusive mold-form forging, which only a handful of wheel manufacturers are able to replicate. Rays boasts the most advanced technological capabilities of all these companies. They take special pride in having established a system that enables high-performance forged wheels to be provided at reasonable prices while continuing to offer not only a variety of size settings, but also a diverse range of designs that meet market needs through continuous technological innovation.

Rays' forged wheels are made using mold-form forging technology, which involves the use of a dedicated mold for each type of wheel and a differently shaped mold for each process. The basic idea is to form the shape of the wheel during the forging process, the form the grain of the metal to the shape of the wheel. This requires the use of advanced technology, and this method is both labor-intensive and time-consuming, but Rays believes this to be the only forging method that fully exploits the intrinsic potential of forging.

The ratio obtained by dividing the cross-section of the completed forged wheel by that of the original billet is known as the forging ratio. Essentially, it represents how much the shape of the original billet has changed, but what matters most in this process is the ability to apply pressure.

RAYS boasts a 10,000-ton forging machine enables a wheel with a high forging ratio to be molded in a single pressing. It also allows materials to be spread across wheels designed to have a large surface area quickly and uniformly, even if they have a diameter of over 20 inches. Consequently, this machine dramatically increases production efficiency for high-quality forged wheels.

Forged wheels have a major edge over cast wheels because cast wheels are inherently porous. The inherent strength of forged wheels allows for less material to be used to achieve the desired structural integrity, resulting in a significantly lighter wheel. Often time forged wheels use a “Monoblock” design, but they can also use a two-piece or three-piece design which allows for greater fitment flexibility.

Bearing in mind that the JWL standards adhered to in Japan are the minimum strength standards that all wheel manufacturers must meet, RAYS conducts its own practical strength tests that better reflect the actual driving conditions. The company requires all its wheels to meet its own in-house standards (JWL+R) and all its forged wheels to meet even stricter in-house standards (JWL+R SPEC2).
